3GPP Release 16 & 17 Insights
Various groups of telecommunication associations, which are also known as Organizational Partners, collaborated to form 3GGP. The main objective of 3GGP was to make a globally applicable 3G mobile phone system specifically based on the Global System for Mobile Communication specification within the scope of International Mobile Telecommunications – 2000 project of International Telecommunication Union.
Overview of Release 15Â
The focus of Release 15 is Enhanced Mobile Broadband, so all features are geared toward enabling:
- New Radio (NR) & 5G System – Phase 1
- Massive Machine-Type-Communication and IoT
- Vehicle-to-Anything Communications (V2x) Phase 2
- Mission Critical (MC) interworking with Old systems
- Wireless LAN and unlicensed spectrum
- API Exposure – Third party access to 5G services
- Service Based Architecture
- Further LTE & 4G improvement
The most notable new verticals and deployment scenarios addressed in release 16 are in the areas of:
- Â Integrated access and backhaul (IAB)
- NR in unlicensed spectrum
Features related to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC)
Positioning
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communications
