The Drinks Industry Sustainability Index – Trends Report 2020 scores the industry at 4.8/10 in the extent to which the industry is implementing sustainable strategies and practices for packaging, water, emissions, energy, waste, social impact, and raw materials.  

But as the awareness rises, an opportunity presents itself for start-ups with the vision and mission to make this sector more environmentally friendly. Below we list some of the start-ups that are hoping to make the beverage industry more planet conscious.

  1. Remedy Organics
    About: Founded by Cindy Kasindorf and headquartered in the USA, Remedy Organics was one of the few start-ups selected for the PepsiCo Nutrition Greenhouse. The project was initiated to support beverage companies leading the industry’s transformation with their natural, nutritious, and sustainable products. 
    The USP: Remedy Organics makes plant-based drinks that are free from gluten, dairy, soy, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The 100% plant-based protein beverages are crafted using the finest Superfoods, Ayurvedics and Botanical Herbs. They are further infused with prebiotics to enhance nutrition. Being inspired by ancient wisdom, the products aim to impart strength, energy, stamina, endurance, and mental clarity.
    Product Range: The Remedy Organics products are categorized based on concerns like performance, immunity, keto, cognitive, and protein with shakes and immunity shots being their prime offerings.

      2. Exhale Coffee 
About: A UK-based company, Exhale produces healthy, clean, and organic coffee. Founded by Dr.Rupy Aujla, and Alex Manos, Exhale is a certified B-Corp company, a certification given to for-profit companies that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.  
The USP: The company is extremely mindful of its processes from start to end. Their coffee is strictly sourced from certified farms using organic principles and is free from pesticides and chemicals. They also ensure that the plantations provide decent working conditions and fair pay to the workers (fairtrade coffee). The packaging of the coffee too is plastic-free, made using a kraft paper and polylactic acid (PLA) blend that is 10% recyclable/compostable.  
Product Range: Exhale offers three coffee variants- Organic Decaf, Organic House Roast, and Organic Dark(ish) Roast. All of these are rich in Vitamin B3 and antioxidants.

      3. The Berry Company 
About: The Berry Company is a UK-based start-up started by Khaled El Yafi in 2007. A deep desire to explore the potential of superfoods and make them available to people was the inspiration behind this company. Besides focusing on taste as the hero of all their drinks, The Berry Company is also conscious of its impact on the environment. 

The USP: The company uses only the most exotic and best ingredients in all their offerings while minimizing the environmental impact of the sourcing process. all the produce comes from plantations that are chemical-free. The water used in their beverages is procured from natural springs in Somerset, UK. Renewable energy and natural gasses are used to run the manufacturing plants at The berry Company to reduce carbon footprint.  

Product Range: Juices in 8 scintillating flavors, which are free from added sugars, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and flavorings; are the prime offering of The Berry Company. 

Awards: 

  • ‘Best New Brand’ at the 2007 Beverage Innovation awards for their blueberry juice blend. 

      4. Yofiit  
About: Yofiit was born from founder Marie’s desire to nourish people using real plant-based ingredients rather unlike the ‘fake’ plant-based products she encountered in the market. The idea was to give people access to more nutrition while keeping the well-being of the planet in mind.  

The USP: What makes the company different from others is the focus on creating products that are 100% plant-based and devoid of any animal products. The emphasis is on finding tasty and healthy alternatives to animal-based products and animal-based milk.  They claim that their products match and surpass the nutritional profiles of animal-based products! Even within plants, the company focuses on relying on protein sources that are less harsh on the environment. Also, by growing non-nut-based products like peas and chickpeas they are able to achieve a more balanced biodiversity that will protect the soil better over time. 

Product Range: While probiotic bars are their signature product, the company also has an impressive line of plant-based milk and granola. All of their products are sugar-free, devoid of gums and thickeners, and fortified with nutrition.  

      5.Greenypeeps 
About: Established by Ed Green, this UK based company focuses on climate change with carbon-negative tea. This ethical tea company is centered around the Greenypeeps Planet Positive charter that focuses on Climate, Community, and Nature with an aim to protect and preserve the planet.   

The USP: The brand is the first in the world to produce carbon-negative tea. They do this by capturing more than twice the greenhouse gases they produce in the cultivation and manufacturing process. Only organic farming practices and natural fertilizers are employed in their tea plantations and all their packaging is 100% plastic-free and recyclable or home compostable. Other than that, they have an impressive array of environment-centric measures and initiatives. 

Product Range: The company has a distinct collection of teas in an assortment of collections like Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Chamomile, Peppermint, Green Tea, Spiced tea etc. 

Conclusion

The beverage sector has the potential to contribute immensely towards the well-being of the environment. As these startups show us, the sector can play a meaningful role by reducing its carbon footprint, using sustainable packaging, and minimizing the consumption of resources like water.
