The main objective of 3GGP was to make a globally applicable 3G mobile phone system specifically based on the Global System for Mobile Communication specification within the scope of International Mobile Telecommunications – 2000 project of International Telecommunication Union.

• Major players submitting/declaring patents to and to which specification group;
• Highlights regarding submitting companies (new entrant);
• Major technical advancements claimed by 3GPP for Release 16 over Release 15 and technical roadmap (#KPI) laid for Release 17.
