In past decade three major classes of programmable nucleases have come to light– the zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) and the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)–associated Cas9 (CRISPR/Cas9).
