Introduction

We are all well aware of the term plastic, but are we really well informed about what this plastic is? The answer is no. Plastic is a material consisting of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic compounds that are malleable and therefore can be molded into solid objects.

We find plastic in products as simple as paperclips or as complex as planes. Plastic products have become an integral part of our daily life as a basic need.

Plastic Consumption

Globally, it is acknowledged that single-use plastic waste has a negative influence on marine environments as well as terrestrial ecosystems. Single-use plastics-related pollution has emerged as a significant environmental issue that affects all nations. India led the development of a resolution on single-use plastic pollution at the 4th United Nations Environment Assembly in 2019, realizing the urgent need for the international community to pay attention to this crucial issue.

How are other countries dealing with SUP?

Earlier this year, 124 countries, parties to the United Nations Environment Assembly, including India, signed a resolution to draw up an agreement which will in the future make it legally binding for the signatories to address the full life of plastics from production to disposal, to end plastic pollution
